Another use is to  waken the the PIC from SLEEP periodicaly(i.e. wake up
take a measurment,go back to sleep every 2S or so). Another is to break
out of loops to refresh a device. I used this to keep a digital camera from
going into sleep mode while waiting for and input to trigger it.
