While you can stumble on to some sites that explain all this, you might want to pick up a good reference for it. Jan Axelson's "Serial Port Complete" does a very good job.

The book "Serial Pic 'n" by Square 1 also takes you through a lot of the information - it is specific to PICs (for the most part) but it addresses many of the interface problems (and gives code examples).
