Recently I completed a project using Alegro 2998 parts, nice and easy, to drive two stepper motor size #23, 1.2 amp per phase, two phases per motor. Driver outputs are not FET, but bipolar, so it heats, and requires a heatsink nice and big with a fan. Ok, board is ready and produced in quantities, no problem, still using the Alegro part. Just for fun, I built a discrete output driver, using regular IRF530 (14A) transistors and a isolation 74HCT14 just for precaution. The transistors don't even need heatsink, cost $0.50 at Netbuy (in quantity). So, hmmm, don't discard the possibility to use FET transistors. Wagner.
