OK.. All caveats apply. You shouldn't do it, it may fail later, your kids will know you cheated, yada, yada, yada. However, overclocking from 4 to 8 is probably OK as long as it isn't production stuff. I just pumped my 16F876-04's up to 20 mhz and they worked fine. Would I do it normally? No. But you already said why I did it - the 20 mhz versions aren't here right now. If you need the speed, try it and see. It will probably work. If it doesn't, then plug another one in and try it. Most likely, you will get lucky. So far, every one I tried has worked at 20 mhz (3 of them) and I have gotten email from another person (similar project) who has had the same success. When the 20s come out, I will replace them (maybe). Don't put it in a heart machine.
