There are two types of MP3 hardware 1)Commercial (bugger all info just send em money) and 2) Homebrew. It takes a bit of link following to find a site with good information, but there is heaps of it, from software, to hardware, and a fair bit of information on creating a PC power supply using a 12V car battery (my interest). Im currently developing a CAR MP3 player. So Ive heaps of information and links lying around so if you need more info let me know.
