In addition to the other posts, if you are running short of pins, take a look at the LSxx164 family of serial in/ parallel out chips. You can clock in the 7 segment pattern with two PIC pins, data and clock. Visually, you won't see the bits go by. You don't really need the clr pin, and can tie it to the bus.
