Hi Picsters: Just got the latest radio shack catalog in the mail--and the surprise of my life---- They have the EDSYN model 951SX soldering stations on sale at 1/2 price of $75. Folks, this is an absolute steal on a really good soldering iron! PLUS they have a good selection of tips--including some special tips for smt resistors and small IC's. These puppies get up to 800 degrees at around 90 watts--I think the catalog description is off a bit here. I've got two--one with a small angled chisel tip, and the other with a massive chisel tip for those hard to solder joints--and wouldn't mind getting a third as backup. Only caveat--get extra tips, and write to edsyn for their tip catalog--they've got hundreds. Stay away from the needle point tips--can't transfer enough heat to burn you :-) The big tips take the SMT adapter listed in the catalog, so be sure to get the sleeve and adapter, and order one or two of the big tips (LT336BC) from edsyn! For fine work, I like the LT424, and a "bent" version of the same tip (can't read the number off the tip--but ask if you want it and I'll do some digging. If you didn't get the catalog, they are pushing the hardware through . Other goodies mentioned on the list of late include tipping bucket rain gages ($54). If I didn't mention it before, make good friends with your local 1-hour photo shop--have them save the film canisters they normally throw out--fantastic for storing SMT parts. Enjoy Kelly William K.
