We used to hack belt pagers all the time at NextBus - added a regulated supply to run them (soldering the regulator onto the pager board) and attaching a connection for RS-232 (which is built into some pagers) There are a couple of OEM pagers (bare board with friendly connections) made, but sadly they're both crappy pagers.
