Amen to that.
I worked my way through school teaching intro programming, physics labs,
etc.  It always scared me that students would have chosen engineering because
they heard they could make money, not because they felt naked if they didn't
have a screwdriver with them.

It certainly doesn't help that academic institutions think having shop classes
is beneath them.

I know of one employer whose job interview for software engineers included
setting them down in front of a computer at 9am, suggesting they write something
'fun', and at 5PM see what they've written.
