There are many LCD devices around. For my input, I will assume you are a hobbyist and want to either play around or use it for debugging. If you are not, then ignore the following: 1. Scott Edwards has a sale on a complete serial LCD 2X16 setup for $29.00 (all kinds of warnings that this is NOT going to be a repeat - don't buy it for production, etc). See it at www.seetron.com. I believe it is assembled - but I haven't got one in front of me. 2. BGMicro has some pulled 1X16 LCDs for less than $3.00. I have some of these and they are a little hairy to work with - you have to modify the cable that goes to them to get access to the ports - but very doable and standard Hitachi interface after that. See my web page at http://204.233.101.40/robots/robotsandstuff.html for a less than great picture of one. There is CCS C source code on there for a simple (very simple - meant for beginners) serial hookup of your own - unique to CCS compilers. You will put more than $29.00 worth of effort (a couple of hours) and parts (around $8.00 including the display) into converting the LCD to a serial model - but it is still fun to do. 3. BGMicro has a four line LCD kit that is a serial interface - a very good kit. I think it costs around $35 or so. It is called PIC An LCD. 4. Peter Anderson makes a $9.95 interface (no LCD module) that is pretty good if you don't want to do the code. He also offers an assembled version of the PIC An LCD that has been modified to be a bit more robust (will take accidental power reversal and keep on ticking). www.phanderson.com 4. There are a number of messages in the archives over the last month that point to LCD modules on the web. Many are at VERY good prices and well worth getting if you need a continuing supply. Check out the archives at: http://www.infosite.com/%7Ejkeyzer/piclist/index.html and elsewhere. http://www.mpja.com has some backlit 2x16 for $3.95 http://www.jameco.com P/N163176; Product Number MEG12864 $ 49.95 for a graphics LCD The June archive has more.
