Can I hook > directly? Seems strange to hook a MAX to the pic and a MAX to the GPS..... I've done this with a pair of simple transistor invertors for year without any problems. Use the RTS line for the supply for the two transistors, and a zener to limit the voltage going to the PIC. This suggestion of mine always triggers a load of smart asses who want to complicate matters with loads of electronics.
