Something I saw a while ago popped into my mine when you said production. Scenix has a modem virtual periperal for their SX family of chips. You could implement the modem which will dial-out and communicate using the old Bell-202 standard (1200 BPS FSK) and integrate the rest of your project in the remaining time and code space of the Scneix part. Still need a part-68 interface, but you'd need that in any case anyway. In short a single chip solution that integrates both the modem and your code. BAJ
