  Same as you design with an IC.  You read the datasheet for the mode
and the loading capacitance.  Sorry, but it's true!  Crystals are *not*
"no data" components.

  A two-gate oscillator using a 4069 for less than 1MHz, or HC4069 for
above.  First gate has the feedback resistor across it.
