  You have tried writing $5D hove you?  You have also verified that $5B
generates capital "Z" to make sure you are writing correctly?

  Sounds like you *could* be unlucky and have struck a Kanji (Japanese)
character ROM.  Try character $F7.  If it shows as "divide", you have an
ASCII chip, but if it shows as "pi" you have a Jap chip and tough luck
($A4 appears to be the only remote approximation to a "slosh").
