If you are realy new, you may also consider a STK-200 Atmel starter set. I would compare it loosely to a PIC 16F87X which has more Ram than mentioned AVR one more timer in circuit debugging !!! depends on the infrastructure you are alredy owning ... Kind regards Stefan
