May be not directely what you've asked for, but you may consider it too:

Atmel AVR 90S4433 has:  Flash rom - means easy to reprogram,
                        Serial I/O (UART)
                        SPI
                        E^2-ROM
                        Comperator
                        10-Bit A/D converter
                        PWM out
                        8-Bit Timer
                        16-Bit Timer with capture and compare
                        vectored interupts
                        32 general purpose register
                        128 Bytes Ram
                        "interesting" instruction set
                        executes 4 Instructions while PIC execute one at same Xt
al-freq.

If you are realy new, you may also consider a STK-200 Atmel starter set.

I would compare it loosely to a PIC 16F87X

                        which has more Ram than mentioned AVR
                        one more timer
                        in circuit debugging !!!

depends on the infrastructure you are alredy owning ...
