Perhaps they have a "pinch" in the middle. Also, back in the dark ages before multi-layer boards, a 0 ohm resistor could be used as a "jumper" to help in laying out dense boards. It had the advantage over a simple wire in that it could be handled by automated assembly equipment. --Matt
