If height is not an issue, you can position a TO92 DS1233 or similar on the
front side of the SO pic (the edge between pin 1 and 8), and bend it 90
degrees - on top of the PIC.  It will then take only the board space for
the pads, and height of course.

Discrete brownout circuits are described in the datasheet by the way, but
they take even more board space of course.
