I think you will find many many LCD's with a mA current draw. They look like capacitors, no DC cuttent at all. And how much AC can they take when drivin at a screaming 160 hertz? Two sources: Digi-key has the Varitronix LCD line. I don't like these because they do not multiplex the segments; each segment gets its own pin. Drive nightmare. 2nd source for just prototypes: Any large auto parts store. Get a stick-on dashboard clock for $1.50. Pull it apart and salvage the display. Get the pc board with the drop-shot IC, pulverize the IC but leave the lands intact. Solder a wire wrap wire to each display contactor, then re-assemble it. You will now have external drive lines, solder to a board and you're done. (I admit I just destroyed several units till I hit on this.
