Hi PIC-listers

Can anybody tell me how to place data in the eeprom, and then read it in a
C function?
I want to place a string of chars in the eeprom at the time when i program
the device, but I want to the able to pass a pointer to the data, to a
function.
Any C source examples or help on this is gladly appreciated.
