Well, you could try it out and see! Facing a similar clocking issue on a 6bit->8bit converter project a long time ago, I punted, put in a 555 oscillator with a pot, and then adjusted the pot to the middle of the range where I was seeing reasonable characters at the output (as read by the other computer) and no framing errors on the input. The range was pretty broad, and this was for a temp-controlled environment so I wasn't very worried about drift. It worked for quite a long time... BillW
