You can find out the winding sequence by trial-and-error. The drivers won't help you much in getting more torque, unless you can make somthing approaching a constant-current driver. Did you try 2-coil? 0011, 0110, 1100, 1001 insetad of 0001, 0010, 0100, 1000? You say you need more torque, but when you just wat to get something moving it is a good idea to start slowly and then get up to speed. You can easily drive such steppers via an ULN2803 powered from 12V. Wouter.
