how about an FPGA with embedded microcontroler core ?

The paralellism of HDL is due to device architecture, not the S/W.
Various micros may allow better or worse software simulation of this,
but it is only that, simulation.

Steam engines may be out of fashion, but when you consider that an
internal combustion engine would require recovery of waste heat by
transfer just before top dead centre then fashion becomes rather
