I was in the process of learning C when the first PicBasic compiler came out. It was great but was really just a big step up from the Basic Stamp computers and great for hobbyists. When the PicBasic Pro compiler came out I played with it and found it was a huge leap beyond the regular PicBasic compiler. The Pro has expanded since then and is now a full feature compiler with loads of features including RS232 via any port by bit banging or a single command HSERIN/HSEROUT RS232 using the hardware serial port on some PICs. It can drive an LCD module with a single command. It has interrupts in PicBasic or in Assembly. It allows assembly code inserts and so much more. The commands handle the bank switching is most cases which makes the code so easy. Going beyond 2K is effortless. They just added support for the 17CXX parts. Many people think BASIC means slow, interpreted code and only for hobbyists but this PRO compiler is not in that league at all. I was so impressed I started selling it on my website. I've got several of my designs in peoples hands that were written in Pro and they're satisfied. I offer Pro at a $10 discount but even if you buy somewhere else I highly recommend Pro. It really is worth the money.
