Some of the LT switchers allow you to use external FETs as synchronous switches. Leads to high efficiencies and keeps dissipation off the IC. BTW, New Japan Radio makes a switcher in a SO8 package with a 1.5A switch built-in. The price is around US$0.60. Try to buy a Linear part for that price...
