There is a new application note at Microchip's site. Its title is:
        "Engineer's Assistant Using a PIC16F84A"
and it can be downloaded from:

the document size is around 230Kb.

It is a very interesting instrument with a very low count part. It features
a logic probe, a logic state analyzer, a serial (RS-232) code receiver, a
frequency counter and a battery manager (the instrument utilizes
rechargeable batteries).
The down side is a somewhat complex PCB. In fact, there note does not have a
PCB drawing (the traces). It has just an artwork of the component side
showing component layout. At least it does have the schematics and the MPASM
source code.

Apart from that, a new version of MPLAB is out. It can be downloaded from:
