With a good comparator, you can probably do it in a PIC. If you ask
Walter very nicely, he might post his amazing A/D bitstream sampling 
method. As a side-effect, you also get the bitstream equivalent of 
the analogue value.

I've been tempted to post it a few times, but it is Walters' call.
