there are tools around which obviously allow you to download mail headers
first, and then to select some for deleting on the server without
downloading them. (haven't tried any of these, because i delete them when
they're here. but for who's really on high rates or a tight budget...)

another bandwidth thing are those humongous footers. not many have them,
but some who complain about waste posts frequently add 2 lines of actual
content plus 8 lines of (non-content) footer to some 20 lines quote... talk
about signal-to-noise ratio. maybe a simple link to a web page is enough as
footer (if bandwidth really is an issue -- it's not for me)? who doesn't
have a personal page, i'd volunteer to set one up with all the personal
info list members want to provide (if there is a need and if none of the
already existing archive or faq sites will host such a list).

if that was possible... probably a good thing for some. or maybe not --
they'd keep it on, just to be able to rant every now and then :)
