The 8-pin parts have 3 I/O and PWM, the 20-pin parts should be fine for your application if it's not too big. Although I have very little experience with either the PIC or AVR, I've heard the AVR compared favorably, and may be worth consideration. The $50 getting-started package didnt hurt.
