Obviously, a fast one. The SCR I used was probably an "ITR" (Integrated Thyristor-Rectifier) which did include an inverse-parallel diode. I don't know if you can buy those any more, but it would be easy to add one externally. Without the diode in theory it looks like the capacitor would be left mostly discharged and the energy in the coil would be dissipated by it ringing (which may not be so bad as it could cause more sparks).
