QUESTION(s): Reply by pvt email may be best unless of special interest to list. Also, I'm on PIClist digest now so a direct email will reach me faster. I could summarise & post info if several useful replies received. 1. Has anyone got reasonable information on the price of bottom end PICs in say 1000 and 20000 quantities. Candidates would be 12C508, 508A, 509, 509A, 16C54, 16C56 AND any of the newer variants with similar functionality and cost. 2. Also - if there is any known PIC which is similarly priced but functionally much more capable in these quantities. eg is there anything with a 14 bit core that can compete on price. eg 554, 556 etc Potential targets seem to be: 12C- 508, 509, 681 16C 54, 56, 622, 826 (exists?) 16F ??? (probably too dear) I've sought this information via the Microchp website, email to Microchip and discussions with a local supplier. Without going into boring detail - I need more information than I've got so far. BACKGROUND: I've been asked to consider picking up an existing PIC development project at short notice. I need information before a meeting on Monday 10am (NZ time) I'm looking for comparative pricing for bottom end PICs in moderate to large quantities. If it works out (and it should) annual volumes should initially be around 20,000 per annum and could be very much more than this if it really took off. This is yet another multi-drop network system but with a very special difference - can't give details yet but probably will be able to in due course. The system has 2 main components - one is very cost sensitive and probably has a finished cost of around $US12 so processor cost must be minimal. The prototypes to date use a 12C508. I haven't seen code yet but I understand that more ROM is probably going to be needed and also possibly more I/O. 12 bit core will probably be adequate. More pins COULD be provided by serial I/O if going from an 8 pin to 18 pin PIC is not costs effective. Summary of prices I have so far (using $US1 = $NZ2 which is about right) This actually puts the $US price slightly too low. 16C56 $US1.70/1000s Must be able to be less than this !!! 16C622 $US2.00/10,000s 12C508 $US1.60ish / 100,000s 12C508A $US1.55ish/10,000s 12C509A $US1.50ish / 1000s The surprises to me here are the lower cost of 12C509A compared with 12C508 and the high cost of eg 16C56. Does anyone have better figures? TIA Russell McMahon
