Brian,

On the web site of the com84 diagram it suggests the diode can be any small
type. I have used the 1N4148 (cos I have 300 of them!) and it works fine.

I have not tried the 1N4001 but can see no reason why it shouldn't
work - In fact I'll try it out this weekend.

As for the 1N914, this is not a diode number I have come across - it this
a US part number ? (I'm in the UK)
