The PCLATH won't have any effect on instructions like movwf etc. except
if the PCL is the target register, so that should not be your problem.

I haven't used MPLAB yet, but on older simulators, you won't see a
change on the port bits if they are set as inputs.

Are you addressing the correct RAM page?
