I agree, $40 is cheap for a SMT to thru hole.  I think we paid more than
that for a SMT socket from Altera a few years ago.

I used to specify these type of parts for the Microcontroller Applications
Group at TI, and I'd say if you can get one for $40.00, go for it.  That
seems reasonable to me compared to what we had to pay.  This is just my
opinion.  The final decision is yours.
