Typicaly dynamic mic sensitivity is -75dB to -60dB, typical electret capsules are about -60dB, so should, if anything, have a higher output signal. They _do_ usually need a supply to the capsule- usually 1.5-10V DC, with the correct polarity, to drive the internal FET amplifier- maybe the chip you used to use supplied this? Or the mic polarity has been accidentally reversed? Anyway, if it works with a dynamic, there's no reason at all why it shouldn't with an electret.
