  A couple of years ago, Texas Instruments sold an app kit for their
  TSL230 series intelligent photo sensors. It had a circuit board which
  implemented a heartrate monitor with a serial link to a PC for
  display. The kit also had example PIC code for interfacing the devices.
  I have one somewhere, if you need me to look up the info.
