So do I, it's quite common on VHS VCR's to need to disable the end
sensors when you take the top off, to do this I usually use a couple of
pieces of black electrical tape (other colours won't work!). For many
years now VCR's have used IR LED's to trigger the end sensors, although
they are still sensitive to visible light as well, so it appears to
block IR quite well.
