My Datarase II is pretty old too, but I erase `74JW's in about 6-10 minutes.

My suggestion would be to clean the tube with isopropryl alcohol (tube OFF and
cool, naturally) and see if that makes a difference.

If that fails, then I would then think about a replacement tube not a new unit.
