Eric,

IMHO, if you need non volatile memory, you should consider Flash or
EEPROM technology.  There are some very dense serial connected (pick
SPI or I2C) ones around from Atmel, Dallas, Xicor, MicroChip, etc.

32K x 8 in an 8 pin DIP or SOIC is great.  And they are nonvolatile
with no batteries.
