That's IMHO the best way to go.  See below.

Yes, the MPLAB package has simulators for all the Micro-controllers it can
program.  But !  Simulators simulate.  They _can't_ give you the exact
behavour of the device itself (and MicroChip does not simulate _all_
features of the chips ...).
