1. Download and install the latest version of MPLAB (4.0) from the microchip web site. 2. Install the program if you haven't already done so. 3. Select the pull down menu item "HELP." 4. Select the help item "Release Notes For PICSTART Plus V1.50.00. 5. Read (better yet print) the file in item 4. You will need it. The name of this file name is "Readme.pls". 6. There are basically two upgrades depending on the revision of your PICSTART. The serial number on the back of the unit will end in a "-Rx". If the x is 7 or less you may need an adjustment to the Vpp Voltage. A resistor inside (R4) a surface mount 23.7K Ohm, 1% needs to be reduced to a 22.6K Ohm, 1%. Replace the existing R4 with the new resistor. The Bourns part number is "CR1206-FX-2262." This will lower the Vpp value to a nominal 13.00 VDC (12.75 - 13.25). 7. You will also need one PIC17C44-25/P micro to upgrade the actual firmware. Digi-key sells an upgrade kit for about $30.00. You can also request a sample from Microchip or Distribution. If they like you they might give you a sample, if not you will have to buy one. It has to be a 25 MHz unit due to the oscillator in the unit. 8. Page 8 in the "Readme.pls" details the step by step process of upgrading the actual firmware on your programmer. 9. Page 3 and 4 detail the replacement of R4 to change the VPP voltage. I hope this helps. I have just upgraded both my programmers with no problems. Dr. Ed
