I2C or SPI bus will cut the required pins to 2 or 4 respectivly. Atmel
Mega103 has 4k bytes E2 on board. Check out serial E2proms, currently
they are manufactured to 256k bits, Atmel serial "data flash" gives
around 16M bits currently (flash memory with finite read or write
cycles.
