as has been mentioned there are many ways to monitor air flow but one that
comes to mind and will give you the directional data you desire is use two
thermister beads in tandem and tie them into a wheatstone bridge.  What
happens is one will cool faster than the other and unbalence the bridge.
This system can be setup to be extremlly sensitive.
