Since my company created AltaVista, I suppose I should answer.  ;-)

AltaVista works by visiting sites.  It examines web pages and takes note
of which pages contain which words.  This is called indexing, or
re-indexing the database that it maintains.

People can ask the AltaVista spider program to visit a particular site.
After a few days, the AltaVista database will contain the information
needed to support searches of that site.
