Since my company created AltaVista, I suppose I should answer. ;-) AltaVista works by visiting sites. It examines web pages and takes note of which pages contain which words. This is called indexing, or re-indexing the database that it maintains. People can ask the AltaVista spider program to visit a particular site. After a few days, the AltaVista database will contain the information needed to support searches of that site. For further information, go to http://www.altavista.com/ and read the documentation. -- James Cameron (cameron@stl.dec.com) OpenVMS, Linux, Firewalls, Software Engineering, CGI, HTTP, X, C, FORTH, COBOL, BASIC, DCL, csh, bash, ksh, sh, Electronics, Microcontrollers, Disability Engineering, Netrek, Bicycles, Pedant, Farming, Home Control, Remote Area Power, Greek Scholar, Tenor Vocalist, Church Sound, Husband.
