Go to www.picpoint.com and look at the YAPP pic programmer project. It does exactly what you are describing. It uses either a 16F84, or 16C54 / 16C56 as the "brain" of the box. It will program 16F84, 16C84, 16C6X, 16C7X devices. It interfaces with the PC via an *standard* RS-232 interface. Mine is in a hand-held sized box. The web page is in Italian, but the source files and schematic for the project are commented / written in English. Just download the files & open them up! I hope this helps!
