Steve,
You may not be able to find a datasheet for the whole module.  (I had the
same problem, an LCD display controlled by a 44780, but no datasheet for
the display).  Go to Hitachi's web site and get the data sheet for the
appropriate model of HD44780, use that to figure out pinouts to the header
on the LCD module that will connect to the PIC, then search the PIC
web-sites for any of dozens of examples of how to control the LCD from a
PIC.  I used info and code from Myke Predko's website (www.myke.com) and
book.

Thanks again to all who replyed to my questions when I was trying to get an
LCD working.  It is working now and I am really happy to have an easily
usable debugging display.
