Maxxim AY0438 is a 44 PLCC that has an SPI I/F
I successfully used this with a PIC16C77 to drive out
to a 3 digit LCD by Lumex.   The part (0438) has
4 7 segs with three DPs capable in 32 bits of
info.   Have sample code modified of one of the ASM
files for such in Microchip site.   AP note is at least
1.5 years old
