I4m not sure If I recall for sure but it could also have been a flash part. But you may be right, because AVR, Motorola and especially Scenix are competitors Microchip must have to keep in mind. So pushing the F87X to the market may be "THE" Deal, I can imagine that it will become as popular as tthe 16C84. With it4s build in peripherals, it may do things you where you otherwise evetually would use a scenix with software-peripheral. I miss the 16F472 because of his lower pincount - my target application has only few room to stay, and while I4m somewhat lazy, I liked the build-in peripherals - and a 12C67X - well could have 4 more pins ...
