You are correct!!! MCHIP will use the "F" designation for all of there "flash" p
roducts!

According to a Microchip engineer I spoke with on the phone a few days back,
the name will be 16F874 and 16F877.  Either that or he was using some sort
of internal nomenclature.  *shrug*
