I have seen several things recently that are able to generate an NTSC
video signal with just a microcontroller and a few passive components.
How in the world do they do that?  One of the applications was a pong
game that used just an '84.  The other one is something I saw in this
month's issue of Circuit Cellar ink.  It could receive a serial signal
then convert it into text and display it on a television screen....It
was from ITU Technologies if I'm not mistaken.  These things are quiote
impressive if you ask me....
