You record sound on them by feeding them an address (where in their memory to record), tell it to start recording, feed in an analog signal, then tell it to stop recording. To play back, you feed address, and tell it to play. ISD makes them ( http://www.isd.com ) I'm not sure what the I stands for, but the SD stand for "Storage Devices". There are many versions available, serial and parallel interface, various sampling rates, and durations from I think 20 sec up to 6 minutes. These are very handy for adding voice output to devices. They have enough power to drive a small speaker as well.
